Legislative Drafting and Law Revision
The Legislative Drafting and Law Revision Department specialises in preparing all government bills in accordance with current best practices in the field. The Department consists of two units, namely, the Legislative Drafting; and Law Revision. The Department is also responsible for the management of the library. I. Legislative Drafting Article 177 of the Constitution of Zambia, Cap 1 of the Laws of Zambia provides for the appointment of the Attorney-General as the principal advisor to the Government. Further Article 177 (5) (b) of the Constitution mandates the Attorney-General to cause the drafting of and sign all Government Bills to be presented to Parliament. This mandate is performed by the Legislative Drafting Unit on behalf of the Attorney-General. The Department is also responsible for the drafting of statutory instruments for all government ministries, institutions and rendering various legal opinions for government entities and officers specified under Gazette Notice No 1123 of 2021.
II. Revision of the Laws of Zambia The Law Revision Unit derives its mandate from the (Revised Edition) Act No. 9 of 1968 of the Laws of Zambia. The primary mandate of the Law Revision Unit is to prepare and publish the revised edition of the Laws of Zambia.
